Detroit, MI -------------
The Detroit Red Wings moved young leftwinger Robert Dome to the San Jose Sharks for a 5th Round Pick (Year 7) and a conditional* 5th Round Pick (Year 8) [*if Dome manages to play 25 NHL games in 2003/2004].
We feel having the 5th rounder gives us more an opportunity to draft a sleeper pick and have him pan out rather than sit on a young player like Dome, who seems to be struggling to find any sort of game at the NHL level. The conditional pick is insurance in case the talented Dome breaks out of his rut.
Right after that deal, the Red Wings and Wild made a small deal. GM Hyack sent veteren defenceman Igor Kravchuk to Minnesota for a lump sum payment of $750,000. "It's not that I didn't want a player like Kravchuk here, it's that I wanted to clear his $1,100,000 off my farm roster to help shave down some more cap room.
All in all, with dealing both players the Redwings reserve $190k more cap space and also gain a 5th and cash for two marginal players.
