New GM Rich Epstein was busy on the first day of the draft, making 5 trades and adding 5 players during the draft...
Isles trade prospect Richard Bachman + pick #83 for pick #54
Bachman is a solid young goalie who put up great numbers in the AHL, but the same can be said for Schneider and Thiessen.
Isles stay at #6 and draft Ryan Johansen
At #6, the Islanders were very pleasantly surprised that Ryan Johansen, the #4 player on the team's list, was still available. One of the top prospects in hockey, he has the size, skating ability and hockey sense to be a #1 center
Isles trade Lubomir Visnovsky for Adam Pardy and pick #23
The Predators got a great deal as Visnovsky is one of the top offensive dmen in all of hockey. But, he didn't fit in with a rebuilding Islanders team that already has Keith Yandle to fill that role. Adam Pardy is a young depth dman, who could be a decent 3rd pairing option in 2012-13.
Isles trade pick #23 + pick #48 for Jayden Schwartz
Epstein tried to trade up to draft Schwartz, and ultimately got him although the price was steep. Schwartz is small, but has elite skill. As an 18 year-old freshman he put up better than 1.5 ppg against 22-23 year olds in the NCAA.
Isles draft Teemu Pullkinen at #37
A pure scoring winger, Pullkinen was one of the top scorers as an 19 year old playing in a men's league. Pullkinen was also named one of the top forwards at the WJC last season. A bit of a risk as his play without the puck leaves much to be desired, but if he makes it, he will be an impact player for sure.
Isles draft Stephane De Costa at #54
The 22 year old forward dominated college hockey, and could be a second line center for the team as early as next season. He doesn't have the upside of some other players available, but he is NHL ready.
Isles trade picks 129, 135 and 159 for pick 96
Not much to say about this. Epstein is trying to trade quantity for quality. Reportedly Epstein had a group of 10 or so players he thought would be available on day 2 that he had rated highly.
Isles trade Tyler Bozak for picks #79 and 145
Ottawa gets good value here, as Bozak is a young 3rd line NHL center. But, after drafting 3 centers and with Duchesne, Goc, Matthias, Abdelkader already on the roster, Epstein made Bozak available and couldn't find a better deal.
Isles draft Danny Biega at #79
After drafting four forwards, the Islanders finally added a defenseman. Biega is short but solidly built and exploded in his sophomore season at Harvard to put up nearly a point per game.
After a busy day 1, the Isles have three of the first ten picks to start day 2 and six picks left overall.
