Detroit, MI -------------
While braving the communication lines in his sweltering computer room, GM Hyack pulled two fast deals off with the Vancouver Canucks and Ottawa Senators and quickly ventured back into the coolness of his living room.
In the first trade with the Canucks, goaltending prospect Ray Emery was dealt along with Detroit's 3rd pick next draft for vetern defenceman Scott Lachance and vetern forward Trent Klatt. Asked as to why he would move such a talented youngster [Emery, 20yrs old] for two old men GM Hyack replied: "Scott and Trent will bring much more to this club in the NOW than Emery will do. Emery is still a couple years away from becoming a legitimate NHL backup and another few years from actualy earning a starting role. I feel we improved the club for this season and that's the bottom line.
However, minutes after the trade he began to feel the pressure of restocking the farm with a good young goalie and was able to send disgruntled defenceman Yannick Tremblay to the Ottawa Senators for goaltender prospect Brent Krahn and a 5th round pick in the next draft. Tremblay was very unhappy about being slated to start the season in the minors so GM Hyack traded him to a team, that has a VERY stacked young corp [McCabe, Boynton, Brewer, Eminger, Mara, Coliocovo, Boucher, and Boychuk]. "Enjoy playing in the minors all year!," yelled GM Hyack to the parting Tremblay.
All in all the Redwings welcome in: D Scott Lachance RW Trent Klatt G Brent Krahn And a 5th Rounder 2004.
And part ways with: D Yannick Tremblay G Ray Emery 3rd 2004
