I cannot imagine this happening at SFU. That is an immense abuse of power. Here is the CNN spin: www.cnn.com/2006/US/11/16/student.stunned.ap/index.htmlHere is the amatuer video on a cellphone: www.break.com/index/student_gets_tazed_for_not_having_id.htmlIMO, a tazer/stun gun usage is only justified for individuals who are posing a threat to the safety and security of others. If he is passively resisting arrest and needs to be removed than there are pressure points and holds that can get the kid moving. If the student's name was John Brown or Richard Wheeler or any other anglo name this would not have happened, but I get the feeling because the student's name was Mostafa Tabatabainejad the police took more serious measures. Thoughts? Ken

I support the random tasering of university students. Keeps them in their place and on their toes.

You wanted a biting comment on society? Ok here;
One of the biggest contributors to the downward spiral of scoiety and youth in general, is a lack of FEAR of the cops. Nowadays there is so much victims rights and other bullshit that police officers have no power and when they do emit force they are always the bad guy?
Want my solution, give the police more power, if someone is acting out of line and needs tasered or a baton to the side of the head, then they get one. In Edmonton here last playoff run it was all about how the police were "abusing" their power in controlling the crowds, you want a solution? An idiot climbing a phone booth, wham, a baton to the side of the head and people will cut it out right away.
The flipside is that innocent people end up getting smacked with a baton, because their in the wrong place at the wrong time. You know what? Get the hell out of there then, it's not complicated. I went to Whyte Avenue last year, and left after about half hour because it was ridiculous that police had to idly stand by while people wrecked the area. I didn't want to be mislabeled, or part of a group of morons, so I left.
Another arguement about handing more power to the police is that some will abuse it and will be beating people for no reason. In the rare case that this occurs have the police police themselves. In cases where a "victim" is the one making charges against the police what do you expect him to say? that they were doing their job and he was in the wrong? c'mon.
The fact that crap like this ends up on the news is yet another strike against cops and the fact that they aren't able to police because they are always concerned about the ramifications. Take that bullshit away and you'll see alot less petty crime bullshit.
The guys skin colour is irrelevant, if the police taser you they must have some sort of reason, don't want tasered? Don't put yourself get it. Show your damn ID, is it really that hard? The kid was obviously looking to cause some sort of ruckus, good for them in this situation for tasering his ass and stopping it.

To get respect you have to earn it. Almost everyone with power is corrupt, but you don't have to abuse it when you interact with people who don't have any pull.
I, myself, had an encounter with a cop last night during his power trip. But I prevailed and am now wanted by local authorities... shhh

Yeah but it wasn't a cop who tasered him was it? It was Campus 5-0, which is basically where they send applicants too crazy, fat or retarded to become actual cops.
