Of all the trades made today the two that I think are going to be the hardest to get used to are: Todd Bertuzzi in Detroit and Ryan Smyth in Long Island.
I have always thought Smyth would be an Oiler for life - much like Yzerman was a Red Wing. He's clutch. I am disappointed that the Canucks are in the same conference and could not make a similar offer. I'd love to have Smyth. He WAS the Oilers for me. However on the other hand I am excited that he is gone. He was a Canuck killer (along with Torres). No more Smyth in front of Luongo is a good thing.
Todd Bertuzzi in Detroit. I still recall Burke making his comments that Todd Bertuzzi does in fact NOT play for Detroit it just looks that way with all the red sweaters draped over him. If Bert comes back healthy it will be scary to see him with Zetterberg or Datsyuk.
I'm pleased with the Canucks moves. Nothign that will upset any chemistry. I don't mind having Sopel back. He had brain cramps - not as many as Jovo though - but he was great at keeping the puck in the zone during a PP. Something Krajicek has struggled with all year.
Ohlund / Sopel Bieksa / Mitchell Krajicek / Salo Fiztpatrick
Smolinski should pretty much replace Kesler - has good speed, forcheck, and defensive awareness. I don't expect oodles of offense and that maybe my biggest disappointment with Nonis today. Smolinski is not the RW we needed. Pyatt is not exactly tearing it up and Bulis... Bulis is just fucking awful.
Sedin / Sedin / Pyatt Naslund / Smolinski / Bulis Cooke / Morrison / Linden Burrows / Green / Cowan
Ugh....

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Well the Oilers were already out of the race, if we are able to re-sign Smytty or if it looked like it was going to be impossible to re-sign him then I like the deal. If he was still thinking about re-singing and the trade has soured him on that then I am dissapointed. I will probably never know the outcome so for now all I have to do is accept it. I hope that the Oilers with the depth of prospects and having 3 1st rounders this year and potentially 5 in the next 2 years (depending on what Anaheim does) are positioning themselves for a top 5 pick.

The Oilers could not have re-signed Smyth to 5.5-6 million and been a competitive team next year. The contract would've handicapped their ability to improve the defense which needs it badly.
Some of those contracts that were signed in the offseason caused this and the fact that they signed everyone else over Smyth (The 2.5 for Pisani stands out).
I also hate the people who whine that the NHL is going back to its pre-cba days as the Oilers are forced to trade away their players again because they cannot afford them. This was not a case of Edmonton not being able to afford him cash wise.
