It's a weird thing to watch. A goalie one year is the cream of the crop or is the best young goalie and the next everything is going wrong.
Just watching highlights of Toivonen who is having a horrible year for a goalie ranked so highly.

word gets around bout how to beat the goalie... hell, some scrub told a player in a shootout to "shoot high" on thomas...and a 4th liner knows that! once the league figures out how to beat a goalie, they are doomed...unless they can adapt quickly. Lacher, Carey, Dafoe and now Thomas (though hopefully he changes) didn't do that. Toivonen, I honestly don't know..last year for those 2-3 weeks he started he was incredible...and now...yeesh, looks nothing like he did. I don't want the B's to movehim, I still got some faith...just send him to the AHL for the rest of the year or something, no point letting him get shelled every night. Thomas at least makes GREAT saves that rejuvenates the team...Hannu lets in the softies that just kills the team..

at least at the start of the year he wasn't flopping around like he has been lately. i'm not getting my panties in a bunch over this though... goalies take time .

Look at the relative ages of when they bounce down.
Ryan Miller wasn't a starter until he was 25. Toivonen is 22 right now. If he hasn't got it together within 2-3 years, then worry. Lundqvist was 23 last year, turning 24 during the season.
Toivonen's contemporaries (Cam Ward being the exception) are Josh Harding, Jeff Deslauriers, David Leneveu are all behind him in development. The little regress isn't a worry.
Toivonen, was fine until he got hurt, and now is having trouble finding form.

Especially when it comes to goalies, but also relates to years of experience too. I think people tend to forget about this sometimes. When players exceed at a young age, and then don't reproduce a similar season next year. They're still growing. If they are young, and string along two good campaigns in a row, then they are looking good. But we all know how it's possible for players to excel one year, and not match it the next. If it's dealing with young players, then it's OK. They're still learning. But if it's a 33+ year old player, then it could be a sign they are declining.
