LOL. I like the Ottawa Senators team PRE-salary cap. With Havlat, Chara, at all. goaltending (Lalime, injured Hasek) has always been their achilles heal. Gerber is not and was not the answer. Even though Legace is struggling in St.Louis I think he would have been a wiser signing over Gerber. It really is time in Ottawa to make a deal... I'd say try to get Niitymaki from Philly or Sanford from St.Louis.

Why does everyone, including Ottawa management, continue to overlook the obvious. The answer in net is in their own backyard, it's Ray Emery. It was a slap in the face when they signed Gerber over the summer. He showed down the stretch and into the playoffs that he could handle being the starter for the Sens and they continue to look elsewhere. If I was Emery, I would be taking the first boat out of town when I was a free agent.
And it's not just the goaltending, it's the entire defensive game they play. The defence has been very suspect and the forwards provide little support. Yes, the goalies are letting it bad goals, but the team should be able to get over that. It's a full effort in Ottawa.

agreed... though i think emery is hurt no? Gerber I did not think was a great solution in nets. I would prefer to see Glass, Guard in nets...and even Elliot at end of NCAA year...put one of these three as back up...Gerber is not a solution in nets.

Well if the rumours were true they could have had Nabokov for Havlat, but messed up as they were pushing for Toskala due to the lower salary. Nabokov would sure look good in Ottawa and then SJ wouldnt have the two-goalie system they have now. Sure its working for them but with both goalies playing so well they are gonna want more time eventually.

I think the extra 1.6 million between Nabby and Gerber was make or break... In Havlat and Smolinski, they gave up $7.9 million in salary. In Gerber, Corvo, and Preissing you have $5,875,000 and not only do you have a goalie, but two top four blueliners. If you Trade Smoke and Havlat to SJ for Nabby, you give up $2.6 M in salary even if the Sharks take Smolinski, one would think they would likely want to move something back. I don't see them doing Preissing and Nabby for Havlat and Smolinski. AND even if they did, you wouldn't have enough money left over to sign Corvo.

This is all speculative anyway, but why couldnt they have still brought Chicago in to the fold. SJ might be better off too with what they ended up with as right now on any given night they have the best back up in the league. It is a nice luxury to be sure, but in reality that asset would be better served in the form of another asset on the ice, and they could have potentially had that adding Havlat to the fold for not a whole lot more than what Nabby makes. They could have flipped Smoke off somewhere else too if they didnt want him. SJ is well clear of the cap, so I dont see why they personally wouldnt be happy taking Havlat and then giving up Nabby and a pick ( pick that they could have gotten back in sending SMolinski somewhere). The Sens would clear space to afford Nabokov, they would not have Preissing likely but so what, him and Corvo are redundant anyway and they would be far superior in the far more important position. I think Ottawa would be a better team today with Nabby and another #6 Dman than with Gerber and Preissing. I think it could have worked had Ottawa wanted it too, they just chose to take the easy way out and well now the easy way it making wins not come so easy.
