Have they learned NOTHING for their Yashin signing? Did the learn NOTHING for last season where goaltending became a fickle part of the NHL where top goalies faltered...

The Scary part is that this might not be the worst thing he does this offseason.

This was the most telling part of that story.... [/quote] All I can think of when i read an Islander's story this offseason mentioning Charles Wang is CaddyShack. "Come on, Wang, it just the parking lot... This is a restricted club Wang, so don't tell them you're Jewish."

Look, i don't agree with them signing DiPietro for 15 years, but if he does by some miracle become a true #1 superstar goaltender in the near future, then the team has him signed at a bargain.
Think of it, let's say within 5 years he does end up winning 40+ games a season, brings a cup back to Long Island and then continues a dominance in nets that is rarley seen, he is a bargin at this price.
But realistically, the contract should have waited another year as he was still a RFA and at most a 10 year contract would have been a better option. Why is Wang going to pay him this much money on a 40 year old who will probably be an over paid back up in the last 5 years of this contract.

Wang must have some rose coloured glasses on when watching Dipietro play last year. I thought he was a weak goalie...

Wang is a business man making a 100% business decision based on a player who hasn't done his business. He's treating DiPietro like an asset that can't fluxuate in value. Meanwhile, I'd like to see him succeed, I don't think DiPietro will be anything better than above average.
I'd say a bad move overall. If sports contracts have taught me anything it's sign anyone to a max of 5 years, and then re-negotiate in the middle if need be.

Consider the "average" for each year is 4.5 mil or so for an above averge goalie it isn't so bad. Then again is most likely DiPietro will be "above average" and just that. He's 25 right now, assuming that he will peak then decline at 35 you get around 10 years of fair vaule and the rest of the 5 years are overpaid... then again he might retired by then.
From a purely finiancial point of view this is not a bad deal. However at hockey point of view Wang just screwed the team of flexilibility (cap and roster) and any potential major upgrade in goal.

With the new CBA, players or teams are not allowed to re-negotiate any deals.
Once a contract is signed, that is it until the contract expires. Though i think they can still sign contract extensions.

extentions are what I was referring to, I think he's putting all his eggs in one basket.
