Things I like:
1. The new icing rules - I think that this has had a major impact and would have liked to see it incorporated without all the other rules.
2. The no red line is good too, there are some nice passes, but more importantly there is no 'two line pass' whistles
3. SOME of the officiating.
Things I don't like:
1. Most of the officiating. There are too many power plays and that takes pace right out of the game. I was falling asleep in the first period of the Habs - Leafs game last Saturday. All those calls . . what nonsense. I understand that things are going to be called 'tighter' but some of the penalties have been ridiculous (like the one the leafs just beatt the rangers by)
2) Sorry, not a shootout fan. I would much rather have seen more four on four. I think the shootout undermines the 'team sportedness' of hockey. 20 guys playing their guts out for 65 minutes and it comes down to three breakways . .
3) I think the cap just might solve the problem of irresponsible owners who can't work a budget, but it's too restrictive. This Todd Marchant thing is an example of that. Plus the leafs have some players who I sure would like to see play, but because of the wonderful cap world a coach and GM are reluctant to have any one way contracts sitting in the pressbox.
4) They didn't need to go after the goalies on their equipment (I think that rule was overkill). As a furtherance to that, I think Bettman and the boys have tried to solve all the league's problems in one fell swoop. This goalie gear thing is a part of that and I think was unneccessary. They just have done too much a little too fast
5) The goalie playing the puck rule - WHAT A CROC, see point 4)
6) Revenue sharing and this salary escrow thing. Owners just being greedy. If a team can't compete in this capped NHL - THEN IT SHOULD BE MOVED TO WINNIPEG!
7) the new My NHL ad campaign - yuck!
In general, I like the speed, I love the youth steeping it up but I'm not a fan of some of these preseason like games. I'd like to see teams playing it a little tighter defensively.
