Thomas got his first preseason goal last night against the Habs. It was a goal his kid could have scored according to Thomas, nonetheless he got one after having be thwarted in the earlier preseason attempts versus the Sens and B's.
Thomas is clutch, has some of the heart that the leafs let go to Florida, and is solid leader. But does he have what it takes anymore, moreover is he worth having on the club in lieu of some of the younger talent in the Toronto organization , Wellwood, Steen, Wilm, Leeb, Ondrus . . .
Probably now more than ever clubs will be looking to develop from within. Carrying a 42 year old on the roster will hinder that and send mixed messages to the younger players. It will be interesting to see how this plays itself out . . .
I for one think Thomas will make the club - why? Most fans don't give a rats ass about younger players they love Steve Thomas in the blue and white. He has always been a popular leaf. In the end, the public will get what they want as long as Thomas doesn't stop plugging away and digging 'em deep . .
