A 31.5 million dollar deal over six seasons. It was my understanding that under the current CBA - the deal you sign is the deal you are stuck with and counts against your cap. If that is the case, does a six year term seem a little excessive to anyone else. I'm not saying Martin St. L. is not worth that paycheck, but the contract length seems very excessive given the new league cap structure.
So what would happen in an Allison situation where a guy goes off on a long term disability. I can quite grasp the rationale in looking any player up for six years unless it was for the league minimum.
I'd be interested to hear some thoughts on this . . .

Retarded signing by teh Lightning. St. luis had a nice season yes, is he likely to repeat it? I don't think so. 6 years for a guy with 1 great season? This could kill the Lightning longterm.
Everyone knows I am not a St. Louis fan by any stretch, the little turd irritates me. While he did deserve a huge raise, I think this is probably the worst contract handed out this season, that our Roman Missthenet for 3.5 a year in calgary.

While I don't harbour your resentment Bryce. Hey I can even rationalize 5 mil and a bit for a guy who got the Hart, Conn Smyth and Stanley - but six frickin' years. A lot can happen in six years. I think that length of a deal is boderline irresponsible - unless there is some 'out clause' I am unaware of.

Players can still be bought out after this season. As an islander fan i've been through this already with reports that it would be better for the isles to buy out yashin next year. While this year was the only year you could buy a player out scott free, from next year on any player bought out will have the remainder salary(or the buy out figure - I'm not sure which) broken up over 10 years and that will be the teams cap hit. For Example, rumor has it if the isles were to buy out Yashin next season it would cost them 20mill and that broken up over 10 years is a 2 million dollar cap hit for 10 years. This is what i heard on various breakdowns of the new CBA.
