As sort of a continuation of the Cujo post I guess . . . I can already imagine what the'typical oil fan's' response will be. Here goes anyhow:
Why sign Steve Passmore in Phoenix when there's already an up and comer in Brian Boucher and a solid vet in Curtis Joseph, unless he's destined to be a farmer.

Because when they suck this year they can move Either CuJo or Boucher and have someone to play rather than rush LeNeveau. Plus they want someone to tutor LeNeveau.
I've got no ill will at Passmore, he is your prototypical #3 goalie, thats about the only reason I can come up with. I don't think the Yotes have a split affiliate this year, so they need a guy to play behind Leneveau.
And Boucher isnt an up and comer, he had his 15 minutes of fame last year, he'll settle into a steady vackup role soon.

He managed some decent number on a weak club a .904 save percentage playing on a bombing range while maintaining a 2.74 GPA. I haven't seen him near enough to judge how good or average he is, but a fella who throws together that kind of shutout streak on the Coyotes must have some skills.
You're right that he isn't an up and comer but he has all the tools and experience to be a numero uno goalie. Maybe that's where Joseph comes in - to teach Boucher to play consistently and with confidence.

2.74 GAA is awful in the "old" NHL. And that was with that shutout streak. take those games out and its closer to 3..... I don't think their is many people that would consider him a #1 tender, hence signing CuJo.
I like Boucher, I really do, he was the hope of USA goalies to come at one point, but I dont think he will ever come close to what everyone anticipated during those early Flyer years.
And the team has acknowledged that LeNeveau is their future in net, I think Boucher is looking more and more like a lifetime option B.

I think you may be throwing in the towel a little early . .
Take Eddie Belfour (god bless the eagle and his back!!!) he had a great 92-93 season (the year after chicago's playoff run) but was mediocre until his rebirth in Dallas - it was not pretty a pretty stint in San Jose - Eddie did not look good or play good in teal. Dan (what happens in the playoffs ) Cloutier was a little all over the map until he settled down in Van after bouncing about a bit.
I'm not suggesting that Broucher will be like the Golden Eagle or Chokey Cloutier but what I am saying is that he has displayed flashes of very good NHL goalie type talent in the past and that if he can get comfortable with himself he should become an unquestionable number one. Some goalies take a little longer to mature . ..
