Ok, enough is enough. Now the penguins add LeClair to the team that now includes Lemieux, crosby, rechhi, Gonchar, Palffy, & Thibault. Fuckin' a, I can't even pull those offseason moves on NHL 2k5. God Bless you Craig Patrick, I take back all those nasty things I said about you the last 4 season.

interesting to see that a team that was pretty much bankrupt during the last nhl season can all of a sudden afford the moon. I know the roll back helped and they had a low salary, but there salary must be getting pretty damn high now with GOnchar and Palffy taking pretty big chunks.

Lemieux's complaint was that his team couldn't be competitive without a new arena and without some sort of way to control salaries. Obviously Pittsburgh couldn't out spend the big guns like Toronto, Philly, Dallas, Detroit...to be competitive under the old NHL. PIT had a really low salary. Pittsburgh is at only $15,793,000 in salary with 8 salaries undisclosed. But 6 of the 8 salaries are guys like Guillame Lefebvre, Kris Beech and Colby Armstrong. The other two are John Leclair and Steve Poapst. So they have a full team under 30 million dollars. That isn't a lot more than they were spending under the old system...with a more competitive team more people will come out. Even in Pittsburgh.

Yeah sure, that was everybodies complaint and nobody was expecting them to outbid the big spenders in the old CBA or the new, but they are right up there with them. Pretty good for one of the poorest teams in the league. Teams like Calgary and the Oilers and Columbus didnt sell off their whole team in one big sweep because they could not support any kind of salary over 2 million. Pittsburgh still dont have a new arena so how can they afford it now is what Im wondering. Yeah looking at the NHLPA I can see that Piitsburghs salary is less than I thought it was, but 30 million (assuming Mario signs for about 3 million, but I dont think this kind of home team discount should be allowed, if hes gonna play and there is a strict cap in place an arbitrator should determine his fair market value) is still quite a bit more than what they were at in the last nhl season and might be a generous assumption. The only big ticket they had was Mario. If I remember correctly they were in the 23-25 million range but I could be wrong. they are adding 5-7 million still, which is the part I dont get. Pitts gave away half their team becasue they couldnt afford it. Dont get me wrong, Im glad that under the new CBA teams like Pitts are on a more even playing field and can afford players and draw players there, but my big confusion is on how they can all of a sudden afford as much as they are spending.
the 15.973 you got (probably from TSN) is misrepresentative of Pittsburghs salary IMO because it has 21 players listed, many of whom wont see a game this year and there are also some big ticket RFAs that team has to sign and the list excludes some players completely for some reason. So Lets look at the Possible pens line up based on who they have listed as signed, undisclosed, and FA. Lemieux (~3 million) Crosby (~800k) Palffy (3.5 million) Recchi (2.28 million) Leclair (~2 million) Roy (1 million) Fata (551k) Pirjeta (456k) Surovy (450k) Koltsov (~800k) Beech (~650k) Lefebvre (~500k) Malone (~1.5 million) VandenBusche (450k) 14 F=19.130million
Strbak or Orpik (~700k) Jackman (760k) Melichar (700k) Poapst (~500k) Lupuschuk (~600k) Tarnstrom (~1.5 million) Players like him do well in Arb. with big pts to display. Gonchar (3.5 million) 7 D= 8.26 million
Thibault (1.5 million) Caron (646k) 2 G= 2.146k
That puts the Pens at 29.54. Now if They manage to sign Malkin that will bump one of the cheaper guys off of the roster and he will be making the rookie max, only a slight increase but still. Now for some reason Milan Kraft is not listed on the page so he will bring in another half a million at least likely over what a guy like Pirjeta got as Kraft had a big season in 02-03. If they bring back Morozov he is likely looking at about 1.5 million as well. On top of that Crosby's and Malkins bonus's can probably push them up quite a bit if they get them included in their contracts as well as the transfer fee for Malkin if they bring him. the latter is not neccessarily cap related but still big coin for a team that was supposedly so broke. I also feel that my estimates for most guys should be about right, except I may be too conservative on Tarnstrom.
I think in the end with Bonuses and the other players included the Pens could be around 32 million for this season.

I'm sure that the 'guins were going to be big spenders this offseason, but even die-hard fans like myself couldn't have imagined the offseason they have had. The reason that they are spending soooo much more compared to the last couple years is that a) They have had the money the past years, but chose to have a lesser payroll since they knew that the new cba was their only way to compete. They gambled and the won on that b) The penguins have a very good chance to sell out every game this year due to an 18 year old out of QMJHL, i can't seem to remember his name, but anyway a lot of people want to see him play, and c) the penguins can probably increase the payroll by 20 million alone from their % of sales of #87 Jerseys they have been selling in advance. I don't think that it will repeate from 91-92 where they had the talent to win the cup, but it drove them to bankruptcy. They seem very well off financially, that is untill they leave the city because those fuckers at city hall and Harrisburgh won't help them build an arena.
