If you are trying to build team around one star player on your roster what would make the most sense strategically? Would you, if you could, build it around a star center like Joe Sakic? A star winger like Jerome Iginla or Alexei Kovalev? A star defenceman like Al MacInnis or Chris Pronger? Or a star goalie like Martin Broduer or Curtis Joseph *ahem*?
Personally, I'd lean to building around either a star center or star defenceman.
I know from experience, that not having a legit #1 center (78+OV) will not get your team very far along in the regular season and will most likely have your team either miss the playoffs or at the most get knocked out in the first round. I may sound a bit hypocritical since my team has a star RWer (Hedjuk) as the top talent as Allison has faltered somewhat. But Allison is still a very servicable star center and he has a great supporting cast of centers behind him (Lang 80PA, and Miller 78Pa).
What good is a star winger if he does not have the center to pass him the puck? I was recently offered in another league Ziggy Palffy in a deal for Mike Modano. I turned him down even though Palffy is younger, cheaper, and signed for longer. Fact is, Modano was far more valuable to my team even though he was merely one OV point better than Palffy.
On the flip side, what good is having one or two great forwards when your defence is merely average? A star defenceman (preferablly one with good IT/ST/DF) is the way to go. Offensive defencemen like Gonchar, Zubov, Ozolinsh, and Niinima are great to have, but they lack the all-round ability to be of any use other than powerplay QBs.
Ideally, a defence corp should consist of 1 great star defensive defenceman (Hatcher, Pronger, Foote) who has awesome IT/ST/DF, and secondly a fairly decent puck moving defenceman like one of the aforementioned guys. Then the rest should all be good defensive defencemen with better than average IT/ST/DF and if needs be LD/EX.
--The most disappointing thing I see in FHL are teams that boast a great young defence corp with miniscule EX/LD on the back end.--

And a note to all you GMS who draft late NHL first rounders in the first round in the BRHL draft... when your team seriously lacks depth... boy oh boy. Get your priorities in order and fill those holes. Ask yourself how long do you think you'll be in the BRHL? Most of these prospects take 3-4 years to be of ANY value. That's 3-4 REAL life years. Think about that.
