could've left out Pearl Harbor and put in Enemy at the Gates instead.
but I went with SPR, despite the hype and acclaim it is that good.

Well it seems I've missed a few movies, although I';m not familiar with either the Great Escape (Doesn't that have to do with Alcatraz?), or the Longest Day...

The Great Escape (stars Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough and James Garner) is about the greatest escape from a POW camp in history. WWII pilots were all put into one POW camp by the Nazis and controlled by the Luftwaffe (as opposed to the Gestapo). The allied pilots organized a daring escape, but in the end most were caught. 50 were massacred upon capture by the Gestapo.

The Longest Day is a great movie. It's about D-Day, but it shows perspective from both sides. My favorite line is when a german general asks out loud, "I wonder what side God is really on?"
Also, one of the best cast assembled. Staring John Wayne, Sean Connery, and about a dozen others whos names escape me.
And one last thing. Take that fucking Ben Afleck movie of this list. Whats wrong with you, putting Pearl Harbor up there and forgeting TORA TORA TORA?

Yeah dump Afleck. Enemy at th e Gates was an entertaining film, but where are
(a) The Longest Day (best cast indeed!) (b) Tora Tora Tora (the planes really scream in that one - it's a fantastic look at the Pacific theatre) (c) A Bridge Too Far (another super flick)
I voted 'Bridge on the River Kwai', the climax is a classsic. You rarely get that kind of closure in a film. Although, I think if (a) and (c) were on the list it would have been a toss up. The four together (a)-(c) + Bridge are the four top war films in my opinion. Some of the more current ventures into war on film, although more intense and of higher quality, lack a certain appeal. I find them slightly over done. Of all Apocolypse Now stands out, but that's a movie less about war than the retelling of a fantastic story using the Vietnam setting as a vehicle. Lastly, I found Thin Red Line to be the superior movie to Saving Private Ryan.

No love for Band of Brothers... I liked it, from what I saw of it, just liked SPR better. If you watch BoB from start to finish (not all at one sitting) but the entire series... you'd say it was by far and wide better than Saving Private Ryan. I like SPR, but BoB by far develops more of a story (which is, of course, easy to do over 9 hours)

actually, I think I lied on this one folks. In The Army Now with everyone's favorite, Pauly Shore, is probably the best army movie.
But seriously, I liked Stripes more than some of the mentions above.

Terrence Malick's "Thin Red Line" is an underrated movie. Some people may say its too slow moving, but this is a criticism of almost all of Malick's stuff. To me it gives the closest feeling of actually "being there". The scene where the G.I's are trying to scale the hill covered with reeds and just getting mowed down from out of nowhere is terrifying.
Great cast also.
