The Detroit Redwings, who are very much concerned over the loss of newly acquired leftwing Gary Roberts, dealt for some insurance on the back end last night by acquiring steady blueliner Steve Staios from the Toronto Mapleleafs in exchange for younger defenseman Ivan Majesky, a NYR 4th round pick, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
When asked why he made a trade such as this when it appears the forward ranks were in need of repair GM Hyack had this to say:
"I feel even without Roberts in the line up we have a good enough crew of forwards to put together three decent lines. I've called up Matt [Bradley] to play on the 4th line who, I might add, was very excited to have a chance to prove his mettle to us. I've also asked Kip [Miller] if he wouldn't mind playing on the leftside at least until Roberts gets back and he was fine with it.
So, my only concern was maybe conserving the amount of shots and goals against. I felt that in order to do so we needed a defenceman capable of playing on the 2nd pairing. Both Scotty [Lachance] and Bear [Murray Baron] are good defenders but realistically are best suited to the 5th and 6th spots. Rivet, god love him, needs to improve his play without the puck for me to have more confidence in him. As for Nicky [Boynton], he's going to be a great defenceman one day but he needs more guidance and maturity. And I feel Staios can provide that better than Majesky can at this point in time."
Some say GM Hyack may have overpaid for the services of Staios, but he defends the deal by stating that "Staios earns the same as Majesky but is a marked improvement in intensity, defence, exerpience, and leadership. All qualities we need for a legitimate shot at the championship. The 4th round pick is a risky bet, but we feel confident we will be able to draft the guys we want with the remaining 5 picks in our possession."
The Detroit Roster currently looks like this:
Sturm / Allison / Hedjuk
Miller / Lang / Renberg
Cooke / Linden / Klatt
Langdon / McCauley / Bradley
Roberts (IR)
Jovanovski / Gill
Staios / Boynton
Lachance / Baron
Rivet (scratched)
Salo / Vokoun
