Damn it James! Grrrr.
You signed Recch ($1.5M) you signed Smith ($3M). Your current roster is at a touch over $33M leaving you with less than $9M cap room. Yet you have an $8M bid out on Alfredsson, a $5M bid out on Blake and bids out on Klee ($1.5M) and Adams ($1M). All of whom cannot be demoted. You don't have the room for all of these players. I don't know why you felt you could afford these offers.
Your last 3 bids on Adams, Klee, and Blake are all voided since they were your last three.
Since this has screwed up something fierce considering who else may have been interested in certain players I will give Jordan the opportunity to accept or decline his last bid on Blake. If he wishes to keep this bid on Blake I will allow him to revoke his bid on Foote.

BS!
Alfredsson has been overbid, Klee has been overbid, Adams has been overbid. Hmmm, somehow I knew that would happen with the salaries I offered them. I should have Blake. But whatever, I dont have time to argue something like this.
But anyways, If I did make a mistake my bad, I wish the Sens all the luck.....excpect when they play my Rangers ;D

He had to make his decision on what was happening at that moment.

Official rule book quote:
5. i) You are not allowed to sign a UFA if it puts you OVER the salary cap at the TIME of the signing. Please consider this in the months, weeks, days in advance of the deadline to start free agency. Buyouts and trades are the options of choice to pursue.
So when I WON the bidding on BLAKE I was NOT over the salary cap....so I should have signed him. It's right there in the rules. Did I take a chance of gaining major fines for bidding out more salary than I had room for, yes....but as I very cleary knew would happen those bids were topped. So if we go by the rules like we should than Rob Blake should be mine. Unless we want to start changing rules as we go....but there is NOTHING in the rules that states I should have lost Blake. I would really like someone to explain this to me. I never made the rules but I am playing well in the bounds of the ones laid out for us.

It has been said time and time again that your offers cannot put you over the cap.
I love how once free agency hits people love to go back to the rules to back them up when what happens is usually becasue they havent been following the rules isn the first place. The GMs who are on top of these things generally dont mess up in the first place.

Maybe it has been said in a MB forum, but there is ZERO posts labled anything to do with new rule changes regarding UFA.....so why not post it in the rules if it has been made official? Maybe not all of us have a chance to read EVERY SINGLE LINE in the MB on every single thread.....you know with life and all that unimortant stuff not FHL that i have going on . I looked through the MB and I don't see 1 title post regarding UFA rule changes. If you want to avoid problems like this than make things more clear.....and the "official rules" would probably be a good point to start dont you think? Maybe the league should be "on top of things" as our San Jose GM likes to put things, rather than attacking another GM's commitment to a free fun league.

James, when someone pulls out the "Life is busy" card when they have made an error based on the rules, it is never taken to kindly by the rest of us who try to. Remember this email? --------------------------------------------- So that we are all on the same page when UFA starts on Friday, MN ET in north america. All bids are posted on website in the message board. Increments are 200K. You cannot go over the cap at anytime. SB are up to 50% of salary value at any time so if you offer 4 yr deal for 4 mil per season...max sb is 8 mil (2mil per season) so your bid is 6mil perseason. Max contract length is 5 yrs. Players over 35 can sign contracts for the following lengths: 35 5yrs 36 4 yrs 37 3 yrs 38 2 yrs 39 1 yrs 40+ 1yr Home teams receive a 300K bonus on the averaged contract...so if I offer Jason Smith a 1 yr deal for 1.7 mil it is worth 2mil. I ask if you bid on one of your own players please include that in the bid. If no bids are received on the boards for 48 hrs, the player is taken off the market and signs with that team. I hope that explains it all. If you have any questions please send them in by Thursday 1159pm ET. jh ----------------------------------------------- Don't throw Cal under the bus, don't throw Ken under the bus, don't throw Jordan under the bus.....look in the mirror and shrug and move on. This email went to everyone.....so any questions you might have should have been answered at that time. If you missed the email..the one comprehensive thread called UFA-FRIDAY should have been enough information for you to know. After all that, logic would dictate that if you add all your bids together and that puts you over the cap, if you win all the players you would be over the cap, and that isn't allowed. Don't over bid your cap and you are fine. Don't make the league feel bad that you didn't follow the rules.(Not on purpose, but by accident.... ) Remember that you and the league are doing things with best intentions....in this case it just didn't work out in your favour. Cheers, G

Maybe the league should be "on top of things" as our San Jose GM likes to put things, rather than attacking another GM's commitment to a free fun league. The contentious issue was not that Blake's signing put you over the Cap. The issue was that you had "conditional" bids out on other players with the Sum Total of all your bids placing you over the Cap. Had you been successful on them all, you would have been in Cap trouble. The "rule" has always been (since I've been here) that the Sum of all your bids + your current roster total cannot exceed $42,000,000. It's not spelled specifically that way in the rules page but it is understood by 90% - 95% of the GMs in this league. Technicalities are a bitch but EVERYONE has to play by whatever written or unwritten rules we have or it will be no fun for anyone.

Ya I did read that email but it says you can't go over the cap, it dosent say your bids can't go over the cap. If it was as clear as that I wouldnt have made those bids......anyone here in the 10 years or so I've been doing FHL see me being a half witt GM? Anyone ever acused me of being under-active? No I didn't think so.......make rules clearer, that way this problem wont re-occur!! Rules are written down clearly for this exact purpose so I'm glad the rules will be updated. Congrats to OTT for signing him, still think its a iffy decision based on the rules, but whatever....i'll move on to other players. I meant no ill intentions and dont want anything to turn personal, just arguing my (very valid imo) point. You all know I'm a good guy to deal with. Back to business. ........if my busy life allows me.....sorry did that bug someone lol ;D.....i could not resist

Once they made that rulling yes I understood the leagues position, but because that wasn't clear to me before I lost on my #1 target in FA. Look, as a GM its my plan to put the best possible team together, if the rules said "At no point can the total of your bids, plus your existing payroll surpass the league salary cap at any time" I wouldn't have made those bids. But instead it says "At no point can you go over the cap"....well I didn't sign any of the guys I was leading at the time and with the Blake signing I was still FAR from the cap. Again, I'm going by what is said in the rules and in the email you guys sent out. Apparently what the rules are supposed to say, and what they do say are very different. So based on that I feel I am 100% right, but because this is a free league where the commish's put in a ton of work I'm just going to move on to other players. I just feel this should be said so there is more clarity next time around.
Once again I will try to kill the thread, best of luck to you guys through the rest of FA. Cheers.

Alfredsson would have immediately become UFA again as his highest paid whilst over the cap.

It was all determined in your succession of bidding. Since you bid on Alfredsson first you technically had the cap room to absorb the $8M in salary you were offering. And that was why I didn't void your Alfredsson bid. However your following bids on Blake, Klee, and Adams were all made without the necessary cap space and is why they were voided.
