I've already made the decision - like previous years - wherein an NHLer who has committed to play in Europe for the following season or has announced his retirement will only agree to a one year deal during BRHL free agency.
What are the thoughts of extending this to current NHL UFAs who are over the age of ## where there is a definite risk of retirement or Europe? Ken Klee and Mats Sundin come to mind right now.

I say if the NHL has no problem with these older guys signing huge contracts (with lower cap hit) with the understanding that they would retire half way through it, then I can't see why the BRHL would have a problem.Oh wait the NHL does have a problem with it.
Well maybe we should institute something similar to what the NHL does. I think the rule is this but don't quote me, The team signing any player that is above the age 35 is responsible (cap hit) for the entire contract even if the player retires.

Yes, but that's something horrendous for me to track year after year

I wouldn't bother with it.. it costs a team more cash to sign a long term deal if they are putting in a signing bonus anyways.

Let's see. I hear two different opinions so.. Are we allowed to go over our cap space with bids made. I remember that we can't and with so many UFA emails im not sure anymore because I see NYR having around 10M$ in cap space and they've got like 30-40M$ worth of offers out there
ii) Commencing in Season 10 Unrestricted Free Agency will be conducted via the messageboard with each GM placing their own bids. Each GM is responsible for the amount of money being bid such that they do NOT exceed the amount of cap space they have available. ((As per Section VIII. 1. i) The league salary cap is currently set at $42,000,000. Please stay under this ceiling AT ALL TIMES.))
I didn't find this info in any emails about the free agency. I might have missed it with the tons of email I get daily but... It's in the rules

Deleting NYR bids is going to cause a domino effect of other problems...

Deleting NYR bids is going to cause a domino effect of other problems... It needs to be done though. He can't go over his Cap with prospective bids. I've been watching my bids and making sure I stay under. If it's going to be a free for all, then I might as well bid $10 mill each on Gaborik, Elias, Hedjuk and Brodeur.

what we can do is something like this -if NYR is the last bid then just delete it. -If NYR caused the previous bid winner to up the bid again and that is the last bid, then revert to their original bid. -If NYR bid and that was then beat, revert the leading bid back to the rags bid amount, for example say San Jose had a leading bid on a player, then the rags upped the bid, then the Pens increased the bid to beat the rangers bid you can now make the Rangers bid amount be the pens bid amount (obviously the pens would have to submit a new lower bid and would need to arrive at same total yearly value how they best see fit) -Last if there were two or more bids since the rags last bid between at least two other teams then it doesnt matter and there is no reason to delete the bid.

has anyone talked to the NYR GM yet? He is still bidding on superstars he can't afford, and we haven't had any official word on where his previous bids stand.

Good suggestions, but there are still domino scenarios which will result from removing NYR bids. A few examples:
Example 1: Team A has maxed their cap space and is bidding on Selanne. NYR beat that bid and is now leading on Selanne.
Team A moved on from Selanne and bid on Hejduk, again maxing their cap space.
If team A is leading on Hejduk, and has maxed their cap space, then when the NYR bid on Selanne is removed and team A is now leading again on Selanne, then Team A is over the cap...
Example 2: Team A has maxed their cap space and is bidding on Selanne. NYR beat that bid and is now leading on Selanne.
Team A moved on from Selanne and bid on Hejduk, again maxing their cap space.
Team B, who was leading on Hejduk but was beat by Team A ups their bid to lead on Hejduk again.
the NYR bid on Selanne is removed, Team A is leading again and is happy. Team B is screwed because the NYR bid forced Team A to artifically inflate the Hejduk bid..

We had a scenario like that in the past where I think Team B was allowed to remove bids if the League forced them into a leading bid through an executive decision. I'm sure Ken will direct things properly when he has a chance to review everything.

Ugh, just got home - long day. Am just eating dinne, then have to help April get Liam ready for bed. She threw her back out or has a pinched nerve so I have to do some extra help.
To prevent any further mess I've locked all threads for the time being. Won't be for more than a couple hours until I sort it out.

My solution, involves the most work for me, but alleviates all the other problems.
I reset* EVERY bid on any player bid on AFTER NYR started making bids this morning. Basically reset the day and extend deadlines by 24 hours.
edit: * and by reset I mean reset to the last legal bid.
Also, due to difficulties touching base withthe new NYR - Gasper - prior to FA starting. I have his wrong email addy in my email contact list. and Gasper immediately noticing the error this morning before 9:30am I am going to not penalize him.

Ok, so any player who received bids today since NYR started will have their bidding reset to the last previous legit bid regardless of whether NYR was involved with that player or not.
Secondly, any player who just got their first bid today and was not directly involved with NYR will remain (so guys like Mclaren and McCarty will not be changed).
And lastly, an allotment of a 12 hour extension of the signing deadline to any player who's last legit bid was made yesterday. To clarify: The 12 hour extension ONLY applies to those players where I removed bids and who's last legal bid was Sunday.

Threads are now unlocked. I hope everyone or the majority are amicable with my resolution. With my late day today and limited time tonight to address the issue before I go to bed and work all day tomorrow a quick and fair solution was needed.
