I currently have Shaw high speed (cable)but am wondering about switching to Telus high speed (phone) and get a free 19" Dell Flat Screen monitor. Is there a big difference?

I use telus high speed 2.5 mb/s connection and I love it. I think I've had it go down 3 or 4 times in the 5 years I've had it. You won't be able to DL as fast with telus (my downloads cap at 250 kb/s) but the connection is really stable through peak times.

You think it's worth it? I don't download large files and mainly use the internet for FHL, sports, and poker. I don't play online games... And my monitor is 8 years old! It's one of those big heavy pieces of shit. Flat screen seems cool but I've heard of pixelation problems. My parents monitor has a big green dot permenantly in the middle of the screen and my PSP is LCD and prone to stuck pixels.

I use Shaw at home and Telus at work.
I would have to say Shaw is better. And to get that 19" Dell LCD screen you have to sign up for 3 years. If you end up not liking it you have to pay a BIG penalty to get out of that contract.
Stick with Shaw and just go buy an a 17" LCD, It will probably be cheaper.
As for the LCD screen, what would be your main use for it, Games or surfing the net ? If your a gamer, you will need an LCD sceen with a 8ms or less as anything higher your gaming will suffer. Also need to check to warrenties for dead pixels, Some have warrenties and some not. Have to check what exactly would be covered. Some compaies say it's acceptable to have from 5 to 15 dead pixels on the screen, Any more than that and you may have to have it fixed, that's where the warranty may or may not work.

I don't have the extra money to plonk down on a new monitor. We're paying an extra $185 a month in rent (the new place is more expensive) and I will be paying monthly about $200 to pay off our new couch and new bed. So, a free 19" monitor replacing my old clunky 8yr old version is a very good incentive. I don't play games over the internet anymore, I used to play MOHAA but not anymore and my computer is outdated too. Celeron 1Ghz with 256MB RAM and Windows ME. I wonder though, I may be getting money for my graduation so I may have some cash to buy a new computer and maybe get a discount on a monitor? Hmmmmm...

Well i would wait until then, There are alot of computers on sale that come with a 17" LCD included. Wait until then, Don't sign up with Telus just yet.

I had Telus, switched to Shaw, went back to Telus, had telus and shaw for awhile (shaw had a free promotion), and then signed a 3-year contract with Telus, which is where I am now. I have found them overall to be really similar. Shaw seemed a little faster but not much. The big difference for me was that Shaw slowed down A LOT during supper time and Telus had a consistent speed. I also lost the connection more with Shaw (which has already been said). If you are getting a free monitor go for it. If there ends up being a problem with the monitor what have you lost? you will go back to your old clunky one and be where you are now. If it works out you have a new monitor thats better.

You can get a 17" LCD for less than $200.
In the long run, cable internet is far superior to that of DSL connections. It's all about who you're more comfortable using however. Here, we have Cogeco and Bell Sympatico in town...if I still lived in town, I'd go back to Cogeco in a heartbeat...because I think Sympatico service sucks for one and the fact that DSL is not as stable, and is not as fast.

I have persoannly never had problems with Shaw, it has never gobe down and i never notice any slow downs during peak times.
At the office they have Telus ADSL, and i must say it sucks. It is always slow, but that could also because it's on a network, But with only 2 computers i don't see why, an it is used mainly for e-mail.
If you don't mind being locked in on a 3 year contract then take up that offer. But i never like being stuck in a contract ever since i got stuck in a Telus mobility contract, their service sucks and now i have to wait to get out of it.

Telus Mobility sucks (probably moreso in Ontario) (and no, this is not an authorized comment from The Source LOL. I was a Rogers customer long before I started working there. And there service far exceeds anything else we have here

I want a new monitor as this one is 8yrs old. Plain and simple. I don't have the extra cash to buy own right now as I've currently purchased in the last month: Couch/Love Seat/Queen Mattress+Boxspring = $2300 New Bedframe = $70 New Computer Desk = $300 New Dresser = $160 New Bedside Table = $70 and an increased in rent by $185...
With Telus High Speed and Shaw Basic Cable compared to Shaw High Speed and Basic Cable I'll save ~$3.00 a month (negligable) but can also get a free 19" flat screen monitor (~$300 value). I honestly don't download THAT much and don't believe I'll see a vast decline in speed just using email, and updating the BRHL site.

Well, I just called my parents who live in Cranbrook and they had nothing but bad things to say about Telus. In fact my mom said they haven't been able to connect at home or at work for two days. So with that I'll just stick with Shaw...

Keep in mind I work for Shaw.. but these are facts.
As has been stated.. you have to get into a contract with Telus.. Contracts suck.
Does Shaw seem to go down more than Telus.. depends on where you are but yea.. I can admit that it does but I've never had Telus so I don't know.. 3 or 4 times a year for most people is norm.
Shaw's connection is faster.. yes it can slow down at peak times but that is closely monitered and dealt with by Shaw, and you can't sit there and complain about it if you don't call in.
Telus doesn't enforce their bandwidth limits.. Shaw does.. but with say extreme-i internet.. its pretty tough to go over 100 GB in a month.
Wanna phone Telus? Be prepared to wait on hold and get sent to some over seas center. If you call Shaw, its all in Canada and you talk to people who work directly for Shaw.. not some contract company.
Shaw will come and install everything for you.. Telus just sends you a modem.
Something breaks? Need a service call? Be prepared to pay a minimum charge of 90 bucks to Telus and wait a while before someone comes out.
Shaw service calls are free and generall within 2-3 days at most. Here in Nanaimo its pretty much next day.

Just to leyt you know, Telus customer service is not done over seas. They have a call center in Montreal, At least every time i have to call for my mother-in-law i get some frenchman who i end up speaking to in french as he has a hard time speaking in English, then to find out he lives near where i used to live on the south shore of Montreal.
As for Shaw, I live in Duncan and can say in the 2 years i have had it it has gone down once and have had 2 dyas where it was slow as there was work being done in the area. Other than that have never had any major problems. When i call customer service i speak to someone usually within a 1/2 hours, usually ona call back.
The one time i needed service he was here next day.
Yeah and Telus, They wanted my mother-in-law to send back their modem so they can ship her a new one to fix a problem with in turn had nothing to do with their modem.
