www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=210558&hubname=nhlEric Freakin Staal? There are so many better choices for the cover athlete, why go with Staal? He had 30 less points than his previous season. His team went from Cup Winner to not making the playoffs. If you went with just point production, there are 40 players who had more points than him last season. Most of those players are more marketable as well. That list includes: Crosby (the logical choice, and i'm not just saying that as a homer) Heatley, Thornton, Vinnie, St. Louis, Hossa, Sakic, Jagr, Iginla, Ovechkin, Spezza, Alfredsson, Datsyuk, Malkin, Vanek, both Sedins, Cammalleri, MacDonald, and Kovalchuk. And, that's just going by points and only counting forwards, not defensemen or goalies. Even if you take out Ovechkin, Iginla, Sakic, and Lecavalier from that list because they previously were cover athletes, there still are alot of better choices out there. Should I be happy they kept Crosby, Malkin, the other Staal, or Fleury off of the box due to the EA curse??? It's not just for football, Forsberg, Lemieux, Iginla all had down years after being on the box, and worst of all Heatley was already on the box the summer of the Snyder Tragedy. Thoughts???

I thought for sure Crosby or Luongo would make the cover, I figured Crosby would get the edge but Luongo would be right there cause the game is produced in Vancouver.

No doubt an odd selection...
By the way...is that a rattle or a baby soother for the Sabres....cause when the Sens finish with you...that is what you are going to want!

Eric Staal is a Carolina Hurricane while both the Penguins (Lemieux) and Canucks (Naslund) have already been featured on the box cover. I think they should do regional covers for at least the Canadian markets. Luongo (Vancouver) *Naslund already on a previous cover Phaneuf (Calgary) *Iginla already on a previous cover A bag of pucks (Edmonton) Sundin (Toronto) Koivu (Montreal) For American Markets: Pronger or Modano on Western Markets / Crosby or Lecavalier on Eastern Markets

interesting idea, here's my suggestions....
Luongo (or stop the one player and have both Sedins on) (Vancouver) *Naslund already on a previous cover Kiprusoff (Calgary) *Iginla already on a previous cover Jason Smith (Edmonton) Tie Domi (Toronto) *As long as it's either him getting beat up by Probert or making out with Belinda Stronach Koivu (Montreal)

Not really about EA, but when are they going to add a freaking Edit assists feature. Im so sick of stupic glitches making half my goals unassisted in 2k or EA. In both games and guy will not even touch it, or you get a rebound, or who win a face off, or one guy sweeps it but doesnt take away control etc etc and you end up with unassisted goals. My top players always have more goals than assists.

Better than Vince Young being on the cover of Madden.

i didn't buy NHL 07, so i don't know if they fixed it, but i'm annoyed at players demanding 13 million dollar contracts.... that's the most annoying....

If it's one thing I know, it's EA's NHL series. Could probably teach a class on it.
Enough about that, but I think Staal was the easy choice. I kinda had a hunch he was going to be on the cover. He is a marketable player, who has a solid background of being a good player. I think it was an easy / obvious choice when he did more to promote the NHL07 than AO did last year. AO was on the cover, but Eric Staal was the player they featured in the commercials here in the U.S. (don't know if that was also to case for Canada).
I don't think there is any rush to put Crosby on the cover, as I would probably expect NHL 2K8 to jump on the "miss" and feature him on the cover.
Call me an EA fanboy, I just like the series a little bit better. Especially after the innovative control scheme of last year. The NHL 2K series is just as good, and has a better Franchise mode, but I just enjoy the EA version more (what I've found since both versions have been out). To each his own, and EA is my own.
I think Staal is a good choice. I don't think the cover matters much in the gameplay (except with Turco in NHL2K6), but matters more with the marketability of the player to appeal to the general video gamer. Video Game Hockey is a very popular tradition, most people who are old enough seem to be fond of some form of a video game hockey title. I think Hockey and Football seem to make for the best sports video game experience. Maybe it's just they producers have found a way to do it.
I don't know how much different the sales would be if Staal, Luongo, Lecavalier, Drury, etc. were on the covers. Crosby might have a case, that he could make a difference. But I think Crosby might have a bigger impact after a more successful playoff run.
As I said mind-numbingly enough before, Staal is a good choice. I don't really care about the cover athlete, I just hope that the game expands on the good points they made for 07.

Maybe it's because EA already realizes that 08 is going to be a shitty game / poorly developed / merely a roster update and have conceded to that. Becuase of this they want to wait until 09 or 10 when the ideas they have still in development emerge to put Crosby on the cover.

You know the local feeds whee they have a guy and the say xxxxxxxxxx Matters. We've had Smyth dangling a puck "Hands matter" Joey Moss singing "Joey Matters" Gretzky and Messier highlights "History matters" and my favourite one. RIght after Smyth was dealt. Roloson on the phone with his equipment supplier, ordering a ton of equipment, finishing it up with "Ya im gonna be here a while." ---- LOYALTY MATTERS What an awesome slap in the face to the supposed golden boy of Oiler hockey, who bailed when the Oilers met his demands. Loved it
