for those of you that like covers Im curious to know what some of your favourite covers are. I actually really like covers as long as they add something new to the song.
Here are some of mine:
Wish you Were Here (Pink Floyd) - Radiohead:
Somehow managed to make a Pink Floyd song even more drawn out and longer. Love the original, love the cover. Thom Yorke is an amazing vocalist and he puts a lot of emotion in this cover.
Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush) - Placebo
Seeing this on The Oc last night gave me the idea to make this thread. Placebo is one of the most unique sounding and innovative bands around today IMO. I like to hear emotion from a band and that is never lacking with Placebo.
With or Without You (U2) - Keane
If you dont like anything slow you wont like this. they took a ballad and made it even slower. tom Chaplin is another amazing vocalist and is able to match the abilities of Bono in this one. At times he sounds a little too much like Bono which is I guess the only drawback, but at other times you can hear his own voice and I think he is able to take it up a notch (although ever so slight).
Stand By Me (Ben E King) - NOFX
The original is one of the all time classics IMO. Unlike most punk covers NOFX didnt just speed it up (although they did) they added some instruments, added a fuckin here and there to fit the mood of the way they do the song, and actually show some vocal ability in the start. I like the Punk covers that start out fairly normal and then pump it up a bit. I like playing them for people like my dad or the old people at work who start to get in to it and then get freaked out when they take it up a level. For this same reason I really like the Pennywise cover or Brown Eyed Girl.
Live Forever (Oasis) - The Lemonheads
For guys like Ken who dont like the whiney brits this might be a good alternative as it really is a great song and not done nearly as whiney. It is more melodic. It should have been the song that initially put Oasis on the map rather than Wonderwall (only because it was an earlier release).
Ok I have a tie for this
Wonderwall (Oasis) - Catpower or Ryan Adams
Again for those that dont like the whiney cat dying effect that Oasis brings to the table this is a chance to appreciate a really well writting and nice sounding song. Both versions are slower, the Cat Power version (female lead) is a little alternative chick folk rocky but even though that does nto sound like an endorsement its good. when I play it people are always asking who it is and it perks their interest. Ryan Adams manages to do something in this cover that he did with his own music which is record a good song. Again a cover with a lot of emotion, great vocalist, made it his own, great job.
another one that I could not decide which Cover I prefer
Over The Hills and Far Away (gary Moore) - Sonata Arctica or Nightwish.
Both finnish metal bands and I wouldnt be surprised if SA thought they were doing a Nightwish cover at first anyway the SA version is more metal, not major hard but you got the power chords going, the guitar solos, the screamingly good vocalist (one of the best Metal vocalists around right now IMO). The Nightwish version is very different. Well their vocalist is even better than in SA but that is to be expected when your lead singer is a classically trained opera singer. That is always the appeal of nightwish, the clash between the hard metal powerchords and her powerful yet soft and feminine voice makes for an always entertaining mix. When I hear this the vision that comes to mind is a bunch of Hobbits in the Shire and Orcs in Mordor getting drunk and banging their heads to this. I swear if there was metal in middle earth this song would be their metal anthem.
Landslide (Fleetwood Mac) - The Smashing Pumpkins (with props to Tori Amos and a general fart in the direction of the Dixie Chicks)
I know people generally really like or dislike Billy Corgans voice well since The smashing Pumpkins are my all time favourite band you can guess what camp Im in. This is just a well written song and really all you can do is ruin it, you cant make it better. The Smashing Pumpkins didd this voer justice though and it lives up to the original. Instrumentally done well, vocally, it is the type of song I like to hear when I wanna relax, and want to learn to play properly as it is a song that almost anyone can appreciate and listen too (just not with me singing).
The Man Who Sold the World (David Bowie)
Where did You Sleep Last Night (Leadbelly)
I also love almost any cover by Nirvana. I think they were able to equal or improve upon every cover they did. Well Im a child of grunge so I may have some bias. These two songs however are my favourite and this Unplugged album was one of my favouriet albums ever. Its Nirvana, not much more to say.
Knocking on Heavens Door - (Bob Dylan) - GnR
Well there is only one other way in the world to get similar sounds to those that come out of Axel Rose's mouth and nobody here wants to kill any cats. Took a classic fold song and made it in to a classic hard rock ballad. Tired of writing and everybody knows this version anyway so thats that.
