anyone going to any summer concerts? Happy to hear about it here. one concert reviewd below. Seeing later in the summer: Madonna in London - This is not my choice let me assure you of that, especially at the price. But you make sacrifices for Marriage and sitting through Maddona is one Im gonna have to make. I expect that she will be a good performer though. Mariah Carey in Etown: Actually I dont care what you guys say I am looking forward to this. She has an absolutely stunning voice that I can listen too all day. I also will not mind having to stare at her for a couple of hours. I like her music too actually, not all of it but there are some songs that make me bop my head or sing along ha. A big thing is that I am going to Ankkarock in Finland in August which will be sweet (hey Jan are ya going? if so we should hook up for a beer). Katja is going to a Bachelorette Party and her sister and the sisters boyfriend are taking me. They dont want to camp though as it is in a Ghetto outside of Helsinki. I want to camp though, Finlands in Ghetto are not Ghettos. (Whats a rock festival if you aint camping). anyway the highlight bands for me are Children of Bodom, Apulanta, Sonata Arctica, Dropkick Murphy's, The Rasmus, Danko Jones, and Poets of the Fall. Other notables are CKY, and Ministry. And What the hell is a pop group like Tik Tak doing there? ?? Would have loved to have been able to go see Three Days Grace and Hot Hot Heat in Edmonton in a few weeks but unfortunately between building a yard and going to Europe my money is tapped.

I saw the Dashboard Confessional last night, with City and Colour opening up, and John Ralston as the opneing opener Say Anything was supposed to be there too but were removed from the bill. anyway, looking forward to hear more from John Ralston. His sound guys were terrible but his music was very good and came though despite the acoustics. Great voice, great song writer, might go pick up his CD as it was just released in Canada last week. City and Colour were a lot better than I thought they were gonna be and it can be argued that Dallas Green stole the show, although I do not totally agree, he was very good. When you compare the Music of Dallas Greens side project of City and Colour it is worlds apart from what he is doing with Alexisonfire. I like both, but two different worlds of rock. Overall if you havent heard any of their stuff it is more in line with "The Grace" which he did with the Neverending White Lights, but even then it is a little more sorrowful rock/pop. Anyway, I expected that I would like some stuff but I like everything and Save your Scissors which was the most reconisable song was far from his best. Oh and he made Dashboard seem hard in comparison so yes his stuff is quite mellow (is this really a main component of Alexisonfire???) Dashboard, well Dashboard was awesome. I was a little dissapointed though I must admit as they did not do A Plain Morning, Saints and Sailors, Drowning, and As Lovers Go (off the Shrek soundtrack) as these are 4 of the 9 Dashboard songs that I have on high rotation. Was also surprised that they closed with Hands Down and not Vindicated but that seemed to be what the rest of the fans wanted too. They brought a lot of energy to their performance which is somewhat surprising considering that many of their songs are quite sedated. Sweet 2 hour show though and I got a tight Dashboard T after the show.

Tool = over-rated
they are coming here. I just have no interest in seeing them. I will get my hard music fix with better bands in Children of Bodom and Sonata Arctica.
edit: I wasnt starting this to try and insult anyone elses taste in music, but you always seem to have to try.
edit again: ha, I just realised that you couldnt even spot the sarcasm about the B4 4 and Spice girls crap. How can the Spice girls open when there is no spice girls anymore. Geez, Im shakin my head at how anyone could not have kept up with thier Spice Girls enough to not know this.
Edit once more: I dont mind Tool, I just think they are over-rated and there are other bands that I want to see much more. In Edmonton the Subways, Hot Hot Heat, Beduoin Soundclash, Hawksley Workman, Three Days Grace, and Hawthorne Heights are all coming and I would love to see them. Im sure Tool puts on an amazing show though.

I'm not a fan of new rock music. For example, Hot Hot Heat. I wish they never existed. I can't stand their music. What the hell is he singing about? Someone told me it was bandages but I thought he was singing about a band of jews. I'm just not a fan of this throw-back style like the Hives with the Beatles hair and nerd-chic look. One of the Hives guitarists in their video is so nerd-chic he looks like Ron Jeremy. It's a generational thing I think. I remember not quite long ago Tony Bennett was big with the MTV generation.. or was it Barry Manilow. One of those dudes and I just didn't get it.
Beduoin Soundclash... again... I don't get it. That song that reminds me of Harry Belefonte s "DAY - O". It's played on the FOX here. The FOX ROCKS apparently but when that comes on I question how hard rock the station is is if it's playing this limp dick music.
I don't think Tool is overrated, although I like their previous work over this latest album. I think Korn has always been the overrated child of rock.
My "pathetic" comment was more geared, in jest, to our resident Mariah Carey fan. Sarcasm or not, I'm taking what Trev wrote as gospel. Trev is a Mariah Carey fan through and through now. She has a great voice but has whored herself out to the industry, literally, and IMO is not respectable as an artist. Apparently Ms. Carey is now on a pink diet where she only eats pink salmon and pink grapefruit for a week.
I saw three days grace when they opened for Nickelback a couple years ago. April really wanted to go see Nickelback in concert. I find their music to radio friendly but I went. It was a great show though. Great atmosphere, great crowd. I went to see Metallica a few months later and they looked burnt out, much like the crowd too. The show wasn't as good as Nickelback, as much as it hurts to say that.
IMO, I think rock is in a real funk. There is no heavy mainstream rock anymore. It's all radio friendly material perfect for those muchmusic yearly compilation CDs. There are no rock giants anymore. Angry skater bands or nerd-chic bands just don't strike me as instrudy giants. I find rock music really diluted nowadays. There are a whole swath of bands that sound the same...

Country is the way to go boys.....best concert ever was Jimmy Buffett in Orlando a few years ago :-)
Only people I would pay money to see live these days are the Eagles, Toby Keith, and Jimmy Buffett...no-one else is worth the coin IMO

AnkkaRock was a blast. Two days of rock and little sleep (more on that later).
Managed to see several bands in the two days, though it sucked that Sonata Arctica and the Dropkick Murphy's were playing at the same time since those were two of the main bands that I went to see.
On Day 1 I saw parts of Lemonator, Mokoma, and Timo Rautiainen. The first two were alright, nothing special. Mokoma had a lot of energy and were a fairly good metal band. Lemonator was more sedated, and it fit their music as they were along the lines of a Sloan type band without the horns. the last one was not to my taste.
The big draws that day were many. Apulanta was good, the crowd was in to it, the band had a lot of energy, and they played hard. My only beef is that they did not play a lot of my favourite songs of theirs and these include a lot of thier hits. Oh well they only had an hour so that is all they could do I guess.
I chose Sonata Arcitca over DM and Im not sorry that i did. They were my favourite of the weekend. They played clean, the lead singer sounds wicked live, and they brought it. they played all of their good songs (with the one being their wicked cover of Over the Hills and Far Away).
CKY was alright at best. Its no surprise that one of these guys is brothers with Bam Margera (who was with the band at the show) as they are complete Jack Asses. Their attemtps at humour were just crude and I felt ruined their show as their music is decent enough. Just idiots like the boys from Jack Ass and people who find this funny need to go back to school and complete junior high.
Hanoi rocks........didnt rock, mostly they just sucked and i would not be opposed to a name change to Hanoi Sucks. An 80s metal band (ok thats the first indication that they were gonna suck) in the Motley Crue type mold (their is the second indication) that is from Finland and only speaks English to the crowd at a concert IN Finland. Oddly enough I was less tolerant of this last fact that the Finns. anyway, they had one international hit in the 80s and are still living off that. They are like Twisted Sister but worse.
Sadly on this day I could not drag myself away from the beer gardens to go watch Opeth, which I admit was probably a huge mistake and most metal fans will probably shoot me over that one.
Day 2: Watched the Von Hertzen Brothers. They were all right, nothing special. I do not feel i wasted an hour of my life, but wold not regret if I spent an hour doing something else either.
Went over to Poets of the Fall which was another one of the bands that I was looking forward too and they did not dissapoing. Played well, singer is good live, didnt do messed up renditions of songs like some bands do live, and played what people wanted to hear. solid show made even better by little cutie that was dancing and flirting with me during the show (hey Im married but Im not dead and that is as far as it will go).
After that ran over to the Rasmus and caught the majority of their show. A lot better then I would have though and they are pretty good live. They play their music harder live than it comes across on the radio. Energetic show. Solid effort.
Caught a bit of the Backyard Babies on the advice of some fans, but was not overly impressed. Left during the show and went to eat while I waited for Flogging Molly to start.
Flogging Molly was a good live show. I find their brand of celtic rock annoying for the most part but watching 10,000 white people move out of rythym was worth it alone. Point is everybody was really in to it and danced like crazy.
Killed some time and by this point i was dead tired. We had arrived that Thrusday night in Finland and by the time we got there had been awake for about 36 hours. Went to bed and slept 8 hours that Thursday. On Friday we were not adjusted and only slept about 2 hours. Next night was Saturday and I was in the festival grounds camping. Well my tent was right by the path which meant to things it was loud and people kept hitting my tent pegs. Twice my fucking tent fell on top of me. anyway I fell asleep finally about 5:00 AM as the party went all nigt. Guess what it started again at 7:00 with the people who passed out early getting up to begin pre-drinking for day 2. So now from Wednesday to Sunday morning I have had about 12-13 hours sleep. Add to that I drank quite a bit on Saturday and well Im pretty wiped out (should have actually drank more so I could have passed out and ignored the noise Saturday night) and could not finnish the day. I called for a ride to go home early and Watched Egotrippi as I waited since they were closer to the gates. They sucked. All that meant I missed Ministry and Children of Bodom who were two of the main reasons I went. I know Im an old guy now, but I swear i could have lasted on the one night of little sleep but 12 hours in a 5-day period did me in. Anyway, overall it was a blast and would go again if I go to Finland in the summer again.
