The benefit of having a goon regularily dressed in yoru lineup is very significant. In the BRHL where injuries are more rampant than most leagues, many GMs are looking for a way to keep their guys healthy, and in my 8+ years of FHL experience, I have a very strong belief that by having a big, tough and intense goon, your injuries will not be as rampant. Sure my teams here havent had any talent since i left Edmonton in season 2, but I personally can see the difference in many teams.
The benefit of a goon on yoru 4th line is that it has the effect of an enforcer, putting fear into the other team, hence less cheap shots. I know there is no official documentation of this anywhere, but I believe that the goons do serve a purpose and if you can acquire one that can play a regular shift, it can be a real benefit.
Thoughts? Examples? Lets Hear em.

I believe that enforcers are a big key to the number of injuries. I only had one significant injury, which came at the end of the season (Rucchin out for 3 months with a broken arm). Matt Johnson was my enforcer, and I played him on the 3rd line and PK all year. he had 18 points (8,10) and only 88 PIMs. I think he had an impact on keeping the cheap shots to a minimum which helped keep my team fairly helthy. Johnson only fought twice (to my knowledge) so He didn't really have to make teams pay a price as a majority of your guys were already afraid of him.
