[Silent Hill] www.sonypictures.com/movies/silenthill/Rating 18A (Canada) / R (US) Length: 2 Hours - 7 Minutes Rating: 7 out of 10 I played the game, briefly, many years ago. I was not expecting a well developed plot nor one that escaped any plot holes. What I found was an enjoyable movie visually and worth my $11 admission. The movie is surreal with your, now standard, horror cinemagraphics of jerky movmenet, sepia tones, and McFarlane-esque monsters. The gore factor is intense... although really only found in the last 1/4 of the movie. The mother is slightly annoying and Sean Beans character as the father was an unnecessary casting as any Joe Schmoe could do that part with just as much impact on the storyline, or lack thereof I should say. Upon reading the movie trivia, I found out that the father character was added in to put more male characters in the movie. So it really was unnecessary. The scenes with Pyramid Head are awesome though I'm afraid he's not in the movie for nearly long enough. I'd recommend this movie for anyone a fan of the game or a fan of this genre of horror...

Silent Hill was a solid movie. (Sadly, far and away the best movie based on a video game). However there were a lot of issues I had. For one, Pyramid Head had no real introduction (or conclusion) in the movie (he could have been removed or added more...but the story for his part is really lacking). He was just "there". Much like Pyramid Head, the gore either needed to be increased or decreased. At the end it seemed like it was just added. Sean Bean's character was mostly unnecessary...however it does bring justification that Bean is alive and Radha Mitchell is mostly dead. (Although they could have done that in other ways).
As a fan of the horror game genre, it didn't quite live up to expectations. Most critics were correct in that you feel like you really need to be in control of Mitchell's character. The story was really lacking even in comparison to the games in the Silent Hill series...which was somewhat disappointing (and that includes The Room which didn't make a lot of sense at times).
But as a horror/thriller...it wasn't all bad. There were some intense moments. The graphics were incredible. The "dead" town of Silent Hill was (for lack of a better word) beautiful. The plot while having it's holes, certainly was workable. Mostly the in between factors...it was just this side of bad, but wasn't that good either.
2 out of 5

I just saw [Mission Impossible III] Rating: 14A (Canada) / PG13 (USA) Length: 2 Hours - 6 Minutes Rating: 6 out of 10 Overview: See Tom Run. Yup, that's basically all he does in this movie is run run and run. Action is very good however the plot line is weak and predictable. Pros: Good action / Tom's movie wife is H-O-T (see below) / Phillip Seymour Hoffman is excellent Cons: Tom Cruise burn out / Unrealistic physics / Unbelievable CPR sequence / Uninspired performances from Ving Rhames, Lawrence Fishbourne, and Billy Crudup Overall: Good action movie. See it if you want to see explosions and action. The MI series would do well to get some real plot writers, someone to invent an intricate plot that really intrigues the viewer.
